An Open Letter To Every Woman Out There; Including Myself
Opening up about body confidence, learning to love ourselves for us and no-one else!
An open letter to every woman out there; including myself.. because we all need reminding sometimes,
I am writing this letter to you; to tell you that you are beautiful. That you are enough, exactly the way you are.
I am writing this letter to you because I've been there, I've looked in the mirror and cried at my reflection, at my wobbly bits, my stretch marks, my slightly-too-soft stomach, my slightly too-big-nose. It's so easy to look in the mirror and to put ourselves down, why? because we don't quite match up to societies expectations of perfection, or our own expectation of perfection.
But in all honestly, no-one is perfect. Those girls that we look at and secretly wish we looked like? They also have flaws, they have parts they hate, parts they can't look past every time they look at themselves in the mirror. Know that you are not alone in feeling like this because we've all been there.
Now, I can't help but think it's time to stick our middle finger up at over-edited images; those 'perfect' shots that we all know are unattainable and unrealistic, for ourselves and our future generation. I say it's time that we look towards each other; real women as #BODYGOALS, not an image that we all know has been retouched to an inch of it's life. I praise the ASOS campaign for publishing images of girls with cellulite, because let's be honest, we all have it and it's something that should be celebrated, not ignored or shamed.
I was SO nervous when I did this shoot with Kat; but I soon settled as she's one of my best friends and made me feel so comfortable; she made me feel sexy. It's such a weird one because I know I'm not the media's idea of a perfect woman, but does that mean I can't feel sexy? HELL NO. I've never felt more sexy before in my life, styling up my favourite lingerie from Primark (can you believe everything shot in this post is from Primark?! Nope, me neither!).
I asked Kat to not retouch any of these images, because I wanted them to be a true representation of myself; stretch marks and all. It's so scary putting out half naked pictures of myself on the internet, but I want to start setting better role models for girls; for us to understand that we all have flaws but that we are all unique and perfect in our own ways.
Let's start celebrating the way we look; let's start looking in the mirror and picking out our good bits, slowly learning to love our bodies, because after all we only have one body. If you want to alter your body or loose weight; that should also be celebrated, but do it for YOU. Because you want that change for yourself; not for a guy, or because society tells you to look a certain way.
Let's start learning to love our bodies, banish those negative comments, because let's face it the most precious thing in life is health and happiness, if you're striving to constantly please others then you'll never be truly happy in yourself. I say let's fuck what other people think; whether they don't like the way we look, or how we don't confirm to their idea of perfection. Let's learn to love what we have, and shout it from the rooftops; because girls you're ALL perfect, so don't let anyone tell you any different. Stand tall and confident the next time you look in the mirror, tell yourself you're beautiful and BELIEVE it.
