How To Travel To Venice On A Budget
How to travel to Venice on a budget, from there to stay, eat and drink!
Ciao Bellas!
Okay I am officially the *WORST blogger, last year one of my besties and I took a last minute, three day trip to Venice and oh my god I absolutely adored it. BUT - this post is so overdue as I wanted to publish it last year, but life just sort of got in the way (it was a holiday, not a work trip, so just wasn't a priority), but something I always wanted to share.
SO HERE IT IS, woooo! My budget guide to Venice - I'm so excited to share this post with you all, I shared a snap on Instagram yesterday from our trip and you guys asked for a guide, so I thought it would be a great time to share one with you all!
Before we took our trip, I'd heard a few people saying they didn't enjoy it, so I didn't really know what to expect. But I can honestly say it's now one of my favourite European destinations, and somewhere I'd love to go back to!
One of the biggest misconceptions I find about Venice; it's EXPENSIVE.
Don't get me wrong we went to Gritti Palace to get some 'Gram shots and paid €50 for two Aperol Spritz (excuse me whilst I go cry into my beans on toast!), so if you're in the main tourist spots or luxe hotels; sure, it's expensive!
BUT we managed to do Venice on a budget; which so many of you guys were shocked by, so I thought I'd put together a guide on how we managed to keep costs down and explore one of Italy's most romantic cities!
How to get there...
Flights: We booked our flights with Easyjet, I *think we paid around £100 return and we travelled in June, but we booked our trip fairly last minute. I've had a look on the Easyjet website and for June you can get a one way fare from £21 which is amazing!
It's also worth checking Skyscanner for deals as they check the prices across all airlines!
Boat: We booked a public transport boat with Alilaguna, to take us from the airport to Venice - we paid €27 for a return trip which is great! We didn't pre-book tickets, we just picked them up at the airport which was super easy!
Total: Getting to Venice - approx £115 each
where we stayed...
Our Airbnb: Hotels in Venice can be super expensive (especially in the main tourist spots), we found a super cute Airbnb for £327 for three nights - which was actually pretty lucky as we'd booked so last minute! If you're looking to book an Airbnb I'd highly recommend the one we stayed in - it was clean, comfortable and central!
Hotels: If you are looking to book a hotel - I'd try Hotels.com / Booking.com for the best deals!
Total: our Airbnb - £327 for three nights - £163.40.
where to eat...
Cantine del Vino gia Schiavi - Fondamenta Nani, 992, 30123 Dorsoduro, Venezia: Okay I'm going to start with Cantine gia Schiavi because you absolutely HAVE to visit!!! A friend of mine recommended this place to me as she used to live in Venice, it's about a 20 minute (beautiful) walk from the centre of Venice and it's full of locals but oh my god the food is delicious and SO cheap! We sat in this tiny restaurant for about 4 hours just drink €2 euro Aperol Spritz and Ciccheti (mini open sandwiches). This is the PERFECT lunch spot as the Ciccheti are super cheap (starting from €1 so you can try lots of them), you can also sit outside and enjoy the sunshine here too!
Rossopomodoro - Calle larga San Marco 404, Venezia: Rossopomodoro is another MUST if you're in Venice - the most DELICIOUS pizza and super affordable too - so if you're travelling on a budget too then this is a must for you! We ate here several times the food was so good!
CoVino - Calle del Pestrin, 30122 Venezia: A friend also recommended CoVino to us, a family run small restaurant with about 8 tables, the food was delicious and the attention to detail and customers was incredible. Lots of local produce used in creative ways - slightly more expensive but great for a special treat, another must!
Suso La Gelatoteca - Calle della Bissa / San Marco / Venezia: SuSo has to be the BEST ice cream shop in Venice - you'll likely queue but it's so worth it! We had to eat ours super quick as it was 30 degrees out, but not that we had a problem with that haha! I went for Salted caramel and Hazelnut - it was LUSH!
The Gritti Palace - Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, 30124 Venezia: Okay this one is FAR from budget (we paid nearly €50 for two Aperol Spritz.. ouch!), BUT the views here are simply stunning! It's a great way to spend a few hours just sitting on the canal and watching the world go by! We didn't eat here as it was so expensive, but the views alone were worth the price of the drink!
What to do...
Take a day trip to Burano: A MUST if you're looking for some colourful Instagram shots, or just a beautiful walk around Burano! The boat ride takes about 45 minutes from Venice and costs around €6.50, we spent half a day in Burano and absolutely loved it!
There we have it guys - my budget guide to Venice, nearly a year late but we got there haha! I really hope you found this post useful and it inspires you to visit Venice, it's honestly one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited - I hope to return one day!
We spent £163.40 on our hotel, roughly £120 on flights and boat transfer to Venice, and we both took £150 spending money for three days (I had to put the Gritti Palace bill on my car but everything else was paid for with out spending money!).
Total: So for just under £450, we spent 3 days in Venice, including flights, boat transfer, accommodation and spending money - for somewhere that everyone claims to be super expensive, I'd say we did pretty well!
Writing up this post has already got me itching to look at flights back! Have you been to Venice before? Is it somewhere you'd like to visit?
