Sharing our first home renovation in today's post - here's our new bedroom!...
DUN DUN DUN… my first home post is LIVE!!
I have been SOexcited to share this with you all, lots of you have asked for a home tour, but I love the idea of focusing on one room at a time and doing before and afters (I’ll do a full home tour once the house is complete!).
One thing I learnt pretty quickly, was that when we moved in our house was a blank canvas, which is VERYexciting, but also quite overwhelming as you want to do everything all at once, but it’s just not possible.
So, after thinking it through, Ben and I decided that the bedroom and lounge should be our first two focuses as that’s where we spend most of our time, so today brings me SOmuch pleasure to show you our bedroom (including before and after shots – woo!).
Habitat has teamed up with online interior design company, Homewings, to show how to make the best use of a small space and maximise it using stylish hacks, so in turn, we have partnered with Habitat to share some of these top tips through the Habitat pieces we chose for our bedroom.
I’m going to start by saying our bedroom IS a fairly small space (it’s not tiny by a long shot, but it’s not a large double bedroom either), so we had to be careful and clever when decorating this room. Especially as I knew I wanted to have one dark feature wall (I was worried this would close in the room but it actually doesn’t and I LOVE it!).
The first thing I knew had to go was the pale yellow on the walls (eww), so we picked out our colour scheme and opted for a rich navy blue and white to help open up the room. We wanted to keep the furniture quite neutral and have gold detailing in the room.
Here's a before and after shot (please excuse the iPhone shot haha!). The bedroom was previously a pale yellow which I wanted gone STRAIGHT away, so one of the first things we did was white wash the walls whilst we decided how we wanted to decorate. The bedding and paintings we put up when we first moved in to make it feel a little more homely and ours, it's so crazy seeing the transformation side by side - I'm so in love with our new room! What do you think?!
Let’s kick this post off with some top tips on renovating a small space and the LUSH Habitat pieces we chose for our bedroom!...
What Homewings say:
1.) Go large on the rugs: This is a great hack and one we use in our designs a lot. If you have a small space, then try incorporating an oversized rug as a base to the room that will spread beneath most your furniture (such as sofa, coffee table and armchair). This makes the room appear wider to the eye and gives the illusion of more space whereas a smaller rug size can sometimes highlight the smaller footprint of a room.
What we picked from Habitat:We picked out this gorgeous zig zag rug as it fitted in with our neutral colour scheme, I loved the idea of having an oversized rug and spreading it under the bed to make the room look bigger – it has the exact effect that Homewings said it would, YAY!

2.) Use ‘skinny framed’ furniture - Put simply – the lighter a space, the larger it appears. Natural light is the key to making a space feel comfortable and enjoyable, however this is sometimes limited, particularly in densely built areas. So, to make most use of the light you have available look to invest in skinny framed or glass furniture that allows all-important daylight to flow right through a room, rather than heavier set furniture that blocks and punctuates a room. Light woods, light colours and metallic surfaces are also your friend here that will all help reflect light and give a more spacious feel to a space.
What we picked from Habitat: I fell in LOVE with this Nadia natural handwoven rattan kingsize bed the moment I saw it, I knew it would look so great against the navy wall and as Homewings had mentioned, light woods and natural furniture would help reflect light and give a more spacious feel to the space – this bed did exactly that!

3.) Be clever with lighting - Directing light up and illuminating dark corners helps give an illusion of added height, which is particularly useful if you have low ceilings. Choose floor lamps and table lamps that have a minimal footprint.
What we picked from Habitat: Even though we didn’t opt for up-lighting, we did go for these stunning Marbelle Brass table lamps to illuminate each corner of the room – we wanted them without lamp shades so they would take up less space (given that the room was small to start with we didn’t want to overwhelm it with lampshades), plus, we could leave these cool light bulbs on display – I love this look!

We also picked out this white LINEN White duvet set which I think helps to really brighten up the room, and it stands out beautifully against the navy (PLUS it’s the cosiest bed linen EVER – I’d highly recommend it!).
There we have it guys – our first room of the house is complete (we’re going to change the light fittings and door handles so we have a couple more small jobs to finish in the bedroom but the bulk is done), and I for one, am SO happy with the result!
It was tricky transforming a small space but I have to say that with the helps and tips from Homewings, and the beautiful pieces we pieced out from Habitat, we did it! I personally don’t feel like the room looks small anymore, if anything the small space furniture we picked really helped to open up the room.
