7 Ways To Combat Home Sickness When travelling Solo

Sharing my 7 top tips on how to combat home sickness when travelling solo!

IMG_1886I’m writing this post in the midst of a five week trip around Singapore and Bali, because let’s face it - home sickness was always going to come along at some point. Or was it? I’ve meant so many incredible people on this trip who have been travelling anything from 3 months to a year and haven’t really felt home sick, and you know what? That’s okay too. Last week I was feeling pretty home sick, so I decided to make some notes on my phone about what was helping me across the few days that I felt home sick.I absolutely adore travelling; and travelling solo too (I’ve just realised that this is actually my biggest solo trip to date as 9 days in Thailand was my longest previously!), but I do also miss home. More than home though, I miss Ben so much - which is where most of my home sickness stems from. He’s joining me next weekend and I cannot wait to have him out here with me so we can explore together, but I thought I’d put together some of my top tips of what I do when I’m faced with feeling home sick; in the hope that it helps some of you guys overcome it too! <3IMG_19681.) Know that it will pass: One of the biggest things that helped me through, was knowing that feeling home sick was temporary and that it would pass. It really is one of those feeling that you just have to accept, embrace, feel it and move on knowing that it won’t last forever.2.) Wear something that reminds you of home: I packed a super soft snuggly jumper with me, last week when I was feeling home sick, I checked into my hotel, ran myself a nice hot shower and put my jumper on. Sometimes small comforts can really make a difference when you’re missing home! 3.) Pack something that reminds you of home: Along with my jumper that is definitely a form of comfort for me, I packed my slippers (not sure if that’s sad or cute?! Haha!). I abso-bloody-lutely love wearing my slippers back home and again, it’s sometimes the small things that can really make you feel better/remind you of home!4.) Speak to a loved one: Again, another major help if you’re feeling home sick! Give your boyfriend/BFF/parents/sibling a call; or even better FaceTime! I’ve been speaking to Ben, my friends and parents most days on whats app but the odd FaceTime call really does help; it’s funny that when you’re missing someone, just seeing their face can really make you feel SO much better! Last week when I was feeling home sick, I gave my mum a call and instantly felt better! 5.) Do something comforting: I ordered some room service pizza, snuggled down in my jumper and watched Pretty Woman on Netflix; I felt much better after I’d taken some time to do something comforting that reminded me of home. The night I felt home sick I was due to check into a hostel but I just couldn’t face being sociable when all I wanted to do was curl up in bed and watch a film so I booked a last minute Airbnb and it was the best decision I could have made; make sure you’re listening to your body and what feels right!6.) Make friends: I spent the last three nights with three new friends I’d made and it was SO lovely! One of the best ways to overcome home sickness I find is to get yourself out there; meet new people and it will soon take your mind off it! You’ll be so engrossed in having fun / learning about each others lives that you won’t even remember feeling home sick.7.) Get an early night: I find that if none of the above is really helping and you’re still feeling home sick, then take it back to point one, accept and embrace the feeling, then get an early night. I’ve always found that I’ve slept off the feeling and the next day I feel so much better and back on my travelling buzz; if nothing is helping then get a good night sleep and hopefully the feeling will wear off by the morning! Whether you suffer from home sickness or not, it’s just one of those hurdles that needs to be overcome when it hits, here’s my top tips for what to do when it happens!…
