What To Expect From Your Trek America Trip As A Solo Traveller

Sharing the scoop on what it was like to book a Trek America trip as a solo traveller & what to expect!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASince arriving back from the West Coast with Trek America, I've had quick a lot of Tweets, emails and questions about whether I booked onto the trip as a solo traveller and tips on what to expect, so I thought why not put together a big ol' blog post on my travels from a solo travel perspective and hopefully answer any questions you huns have in one go! I reallyyyyyyy hope you find this post helpful if you have a Trek America trip coming up, and if you're thinking about booking onto a trip, then I hope this post gives you the encouragement & reasurrance that you need!

FEEL THE FEAR & DO IT ANYWAY...

You guys know that I'm a HUGE fan of solo travel and I'd recommend it to anyone, but as much as I love it, that doesn't mean that I don't feel the 'fear' or get anxious. Being completely honest with you guys, I was actually super nervous before my Trek America trip, I think it was just the whole 'unknown', to know that I'd be travelling with 13 strangers, I kept thinking 'oh my god, what if they don't like me', or 'what if I don't like them', but then I just kept assuring myself that out of a group of 13 people I knew there would be at least someone I'd get on with. Apart from two couples we were all solo travellers, it was really comforting to know that we were all super nervous, but all in the same boat.

I checked into the hotel the night before and was absolutely buzzing but also super nervous, at breakfast the next morning I spotted a gut sitting with his backpack, I plucked up the courage to head over and introduce myself (whilst secretly praying that he was on the Trek trip and not just some guy with a backpack trying to enjoy his breakfast haha!). But alas, Josh was on the trip and we hit it off straight away (we even got married in a Vegas chapel too LOL). As soon as I'd met the group I knew I had nothing to worry about, we all clicked straight away and I knew instantly it would be the best two weeks!

My advice to you would be, yes it's scary and nerve wracking but that tiny slither of fear you feel before will soon evaporate and you'll have forgotten all about it the second you meet your Trek America fam. Feel the fear, and do it anyway gal pals, because it will be the best thing you ever do!

'WE STARTED OFF AS STRANGERS, AS ENDED AS FAMILY'...

This is one of my favourite things to think about when I reflect back on my time with Trek, we really did start as strangers and we ended our two week trip as family. We have a whats app group that we speak in daily since arriving home, I know that we'll visit each other when we're crossing paths, it's such a wonderful feeling to call such amazing people friends. Trek really is all about team work, during our two weeks we were split into teams to cook, clean and wash up, if someone needed help putting up a tent, you'd help them, fetch everyone a drink and look after each other when you've had a few too many drinks *ahem*. Everyone was just constantly looking out for each other and putting each other first which was such a lovely thing to be a part of!

YOU'RE NOT *ACTUALLY ALONE...

Even though I booked onto the Westerner 2 tour as a solo traveller, you're not actually alone - the second you arrive and meet your Trek fam, that's who you'll be travelling with for the next two weeks which I love. I'm a huge fan of travelling solo (no shit sherlock), but this was my first time travelling solo in a group, I really do think Trek is the perfect stepping stone if you're looking to step out of your comfort zone or travel solo, but not be completely alone!

EMBRACE IT!

I'm going to wrap it up there and be completely honest by saying yes, you will be nervous and anxious and maybe scared, BUT it will be the best thing you ever do! I honestly couldn't recommend Trek America anymore and I'd genuinely do the trip again in a heartbeat if I could! If you're really nervous or worried about the trip, I'd say ask advice/tips from someone who has done it before (please feel free to drop me an email if you're worried - always happy to help!), until you feel ready to book it (sometimes you just gotta take the plunge, because you're never fully ready to step out of your comfort zone), and do it! Don't think about the worst case scenarios, think about the best - and how it will give you the courage and confidence to travel solo one day!
